<image:caption>This oil painting is an example of O’Keeffe’s more abstract and ambiguous work, loosely suggesting a representation of the petals of a flower. Two large white folds partially encapsulate a series of smaller yellow, blue, and red folds. The repeating hues of blue, yellow, and red to give the folds depth testify to O’Keeffe’s unique use of tonal gradation in her work. <image:caption>Matisse’s superb command of color and pattern is on display in this work. This piece is writhing and full of energy. with no straight line in the entirety of the surface. The woman in the center of the scene, lounging in the purple coat is Lydia Delectorskaya, Matisse’s assistant and companion. Her monumental size, brightly colored costume, and thick black outline make her an anchor in this otherwise overwhelming room.
